ARTISTS’ BOOKS

Artists’ books are an important source of inspiration for works of digital publishing as they present many reading features that are similar to the ones applied in interactive and multimedia e-books.

Both artists’ books and enhanced e-books challenge the millennial concept of the shape as well as the materiality of a book, the aesthetics of a page and the reading practice.

It’s this endeavor to go beyond the boundaries of the print book or e-book that binds artist’s book and enhanced e-book together. The two formats complement each other in the search of new forms and contents adding new insights in the discourse around the topic of New Media Literacy.

The selection criteria in this list is based on a broad concept o “a book created as an original work of art which integrates the formal means of its realization and production with its thematic or aesthetic issues” – as Johanna Drucker explains in “The Century of Artists’ Books” – however, the big variation of books labelled as such turns every attempt of categorization into an end in itself.

For that reason and for the pure pleasure of discovering fantastic and ingenious works of art, it is more recommendable to visit the pages listed in this section to find out more.
